What Do Missionaries (And Pastors) Do?
- Hits: 601 601
In a sense we are all missionaries when we become Christians. We can all be ‘sent with a message’ which is what the word ‘Apostle' means! So I hope you feel encouraged reading this blog post. Please pray for those who give their full time to missions and pastoral work. Without all of us God’s work can’t go on! The list I have made includes just a few things that came to my mind about what missionaries and pastors do. You may be able to think of many more!! God bless you! We are praying for you! --Jerry
Missionaries witness to others one to one or in small groups and even in large crowds. They have to be full of the word of God and pray themselves first to be effective!
They Share the Word of God
A Sower went forth to sow—the seed is the word of God. Missionaries have to be willing to obey God to be in a position where they can sow that seed which will change individuals and nations! Mark 4:3--Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow. Mark 4:14--The sower soweth the word.
They conduct Bible Studies
Missionaries conduct valuable Bible studies to share both the milk and meat of the Word of God. They diligently follow the verse Acts 20:28--Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
They Plant Churches and Fellowships
Pioneering missionaries often follow the New Testament pattern of planting churches, going into a town or city and winning souls and organising them into fellowships. Even though sometimes weak at the beginning, yet great oaks often come from such small acorns.
We need to plan, to hear from God especially and listen and then put His plans into action. A missionary is “God’s man (or woman) in God’s place doing God’s work for God’s Glory”.
They Pray and are Prayer Warriors
Nothing is accomplished without prayer. Is your life on the edge? Pray and God will change it all. Prayer can storm the gates of hell, open new fields to the gospel and win souls and heal the sick and raise the dead. Without prayer none of this can happen.
‘Ask God for His Love or you’ll never make it -as a marriage or a missionary’. God is Love. We don’t have the love but He can supernaturally give it to us if we are open. John 13:35--By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
They meet, they cooperate, they work together. Hebrews 10:25--Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
They are Broken by the Lord
Without breaking the Lord can never fully use us. Most of us though like to stay as we are. The great evangelist Raymond Richey once asked: ‘Why doesn’t God have more leaders?--because He can’t break them fast enough’. God’s breakings may come in any number of ways: relationship problems, slander, false accusations, financial difficulties, health issues, rejections by others, persecution, death of loved ones etc.
They are Pioneers
Pioneers must be willing to leave all behind and go to new places, often forsake loved ones and follow the Word of God which has directly led them to go to a certain place and do God’s will there.
They have Vision Faith Initiative and Courage
Without these four qualities we can never be successful for Jesus. Do you have them? If not ask God for them and like Wisdom, He will give them to you freely!
They Believe the Impossible
Like Abraham and just about everyone God has used they expect to see the Word of God fulfilled. Though natural senses may deny every step of the way. That which faith has claimed is true. Rom_4:20-22 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God. And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.
They Overcome the World
They are of One Blood and Race
We are possibly the only truly non-racist religion in the world. We are all made of one blood by the blood of Christ. There is no Jew nor Greek, no Japanese or African, Chinese or white man! We are all children of God in Christ Jesus and race or human culture should have little role in our lives if we truly love Him.
They Overcome Discouragement and Depression
If there is anything the devil’s spiritual world wants to afflict pastors and missionaries and indeed all Christians with, it is the same afflictions of the world: depression, discouragement, defeat, despair, fear and torment. We can resist and overcome all this through reading the Word, prayer, united prayer and praise. ‘In the world you shall have tribulation but be of good cheer I have overcome the world! ‘Please pray for all Christian workers to rise above these real spiritual attacks of the enemy, so this won’t hinder their missions and pastorates.
They Become One with the Field They are Living In and Adapt to its Culture, Food and Ways
Missionaries eat the local food, sometimes wear the local clothes, and speak the national language. All this and more if they want to be effective and really win souls.
They Visit the Elderly
The elderly are some of the most neglected people in our societies. I once led a Hindu woman to the Lord in north India in her garden! She was 80 years old and she joyfully said afterwards; ‘I have waited all my life to hear this message!’
They Love Children and Sing to Them and Lead Them to Christ!
They Study the Word Themselves
They Love Jesus Intimately
They Open Schools and Hospitals
What great and successful hospital or Institution or school was not originally founded by a Christian? Very few of course is the answer! The western secular and politically-correct world wants to deny our heritage as great Christian nations having accomplished so much because of our religion and faith in Jesus. God knows though and this work of schools and mission hospitals continues around the world today unabated, thank God. AMMC helps sponsor this rural Christian school deep in the heart of the Congo bush.
They Praise the LORD with their Whole Heart!
Psa_111:1 Praise ye the LORD. I will praise the LORD with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright, and in the congregation. When all seems dark, it is praising the Lord out loud and in your spirit that really kills the devil’s attacks, he cant stand praise and he will flee before it. Try it yourself today and see. 7 Pastor Boma in Belgium-always one to praise the Lord with her whole heart like so many lovely African disciples!
They are Sometimes Constrained to take Secular Jobs for Visa or Financials Reasons
Brother Jerry with some of his students in northern China. All received the word here and one was saved and filled with the Holy Spirit.
They Have Children and Try to Bring Them Up in the Nurture and Admonition of the Lord
Missionaries not only live in challenging fields but they also bring up their children right there where they are. The children often speak the language of the mission fields and occasionally their children even become pastors and shepherds themselves!
